“The Chronicles of Narnia” review

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

By Olivia

C.S. Lewis’ “The chronicles of Narnia” are seven spectacular stories that entwine themselves into many children’s hearts. Polly and Diggory are neighbours and are the first children to venture into the magical land Narnia. The evacuee’s from the second world war (the Pevensie children)are the next to fight for Narnia. Eustace (The Pevensie’s cousin) leads his friend Jill into Narnia.

Narnia is a land of magic and mystery where every day brings new life and wonder. Aslan, the great lion, is feared and respected by all his loyal subjects. Even The WhiteWitch, Jadis, fears that he will mess with her plans to take the throne of Narnia. The books follow the theme of kindness and good over evil. The best part was when Aslan triumphs over the Witch, though once she kidnapped Edmund , one of Pevensie’s, and held him hostage.

I recommend these books to be read by children aged 7 and on, with an adventurous taste in literature, and a liking for magic.

“Jacky Daydream” review

By Yasmine

Written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharratt.
Published by Doubleday.
£12.99

This book is an autobiography which is a book somebody writes about themselves. This book tells us about her childhood and how she always wanted to be a writer.

Star rating: *****/5

I would definitely recommend this book because it is a type of time line because each chapter is a part of her life until she is about age ten. It also includes present day comments even though the book is about her childhood in the past like a quote made about her daughter how isn’t even alive in the 1940’s.  I would recommend this book for children aged between 7-13

Setting/Theme: This story is set in a town and a chocolate factory.
What it is about: This book is about a poor boy called Charlie Bucket and every year on his birthday he gets one of Willy Wonka’s chocolate bar. He finds some money on the street and decides to spend it on a chocolate bar. Then when he brought it, he finds a golden ticket inside. He was going to visit Willy Wonka himself and his chocolate factory!

My Opinions:
I really enjoyed reading this book because it’s really funny reading about the children that get lost, about the Oompaloompas and all the chocolates that Willy Wonka had invented. I would recommend this book to all Roald Dahl fans and those who are chocoholics!

“Spy Watch” review

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

by Jakob

Novel by Derek Farmer
Cost: £3.99

Comments
Spy Watch is a thrilling book based on World War 2.  It is about three evacuees called Norman Starkey, Dennis Sealey and Mary Parker.  Mary Parker has gone to live with Grainer and Miss Millinton.  And Dennis and Norman have gone to an old lady called Amy Hobbs.

Grainer and Millington have been nasty to Mary, while Amy Hobbs has been taking care of Dennis and Norman.  Things start happening to Miss Amy Hobbs, and her bossy granddaughter, Polly.

Join Norman and Dennis and Molly on an action-packed adventure as they try to catch Grainer and Benning as spies from Germany.  They should think Grainer is - after all, why does he disappear into the night?  And Vinnie Benning takes lots of pictures.  Why?  Find out for yourself.

Dennis, Polly, Mary and Norman come closer to the truth.

I would recommend this book to lots of people!  ***** rating!

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”

Review by Morgan

Harry potter and the Philosophers stone is a good book because sometimes it just leaps out and tries to scare you. It doesn’t really scare me but that is kind of what I like about it. My favorite character is hermione because she is rather like me and she was kind of bossy but nice at the same time.harry thinks proffecer snape is trieing to steal the stone for voldermort but it is actually proffecer quivler. Evry one wants the stone because it makes you live forever.Hagrid found a man in a pub who challenged him to a game of cards Hagrid won and the man gave him an illegal dragons egg. The man Hagrid was playing cards with was voldermort and he made hagrid drunk so that hagrid would tell him how to get past the stone.

The book was published by bloomsbury

It was 5 pounds 99

“Double Act” review

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

By Anusha

Written by:
Jacqueline Wilson

Illustrated by:
Nick Sharratt

Setting/theme:
This story is set in the present times.

What it is about:
This story is about two twins called Ruby and Garnet. They both loved each other very much and always did what the other twin wanted to do, but only sometimes! One day they went for an audition but they both did not go through. They also saw a boarding school that they wanted to go to but only Garnet got the scholarship but not Ruby. So then Ruby quit being a twin and changed and looked different in many different ways.

My Opinions:
I really enjoyed reading this book because firstly, it’s to do with a real life situation and secondly, the story is very well structured and gives opinion on what both twins feel about something.

I recommend this Double Act to older children age 9 and over to read this book and children that like reading about reality.

A star rating out of 5: ****
